As an elementary mathematics coach, I love hearing how teachers are making learning fun and engaging for their students. As the school year goes on, I have found that the stress of the amount of assessing begins to wear our teachers out - especially upper level. Taking a naturalistic perspective on learning requires a shift from that traditional approach to teaching, classroom environments, and training seminars.
Learning should involve active engagement, exploration, and hands-on experiences. A huge part of that is encouraging learners to interact with their environment, experiment, and discover knowledge for themselves. When teachers recognize that each individual has unique learning needs, preferences, and strengths they have a better understanding of how to tailor instruction to cater to these differences, allowing learners to progress at their own pace.
Holistic thinking encourages educators and learners to move beyond subject-specific knowledge and embrace an interdisciplinary approach. It recognizes that real-world problems are often complex and require different perspectives to solve them effectively. This helps learners develop a more comprehensive understanding of the world around them and are better equipped to face challenges.
I believe that my approach is to be proactive in this effort as I encourage and support teachers to transform their teaching despite the additional stressors they have on their plate. My goal is to guide students to become independent and lifelong learners with my approach to mathematics in my innovation plan.
