Blended Learning for Learning in the Mathematics Classroom

Dear LBE Administration, 

 

Most recently, blended learning has been pushed into classrooms and was highly due in part to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a mathematics instructional coach, one of my duties is to visit and observe classrooms to ensure that I am supporting teachers when teaching their students math. During several visits, I have noted and wondered - are we integrating blended learning to its full potential? How can we use technology and a blended learning model that is more individualized for each student? 

 

We can improve how technology is integrated in the classroom in a way that will benefit all learners and help them learn how to take ownership of their learning. I am confident that a flexible learning approach will help students understand their strengths in mathematics while gaining the ability to redirect their learning in areas where they need additional time and support. Thanks to our district, each of our students is equipped with a Chromebook for use in the classroom. Let's use this to our advantage!   

 
I am proposing to introduce a blended learning model in some of our second through fourth grade mathematics classrooms. This will include: 

  • A student checklist that is concept focused and concept driven 

  • A Google Classroom environment where resources can be added/linked 

  • Resources that include ‘next steps’ for students 

  • Self-reflection opportunities for students  

  • Teacher-student conferences or check-in opportunities (mentoring) 

 
I believe that a guided blended learning model would be beneficial because students will become equipped with problem solving skills as they navigate their learning in mathematics. This will also help students learn how to shift their focus when they encounter gaps in their learning. Teachers will also benefit as they will feel confident that students’ time spent with technology is not just “busy work” but rather a pathway that will lead to mentoring students and focus on next steps and growth.  

I am asking for the opportunity to pilot and work alongside mathematics classroom teachers in grades 2-4 to help them implement a blended learning model that will help their students grow and feel confident in their learning and accomplishments. I am hopeful that data gathered from this model will demonstrate student growth throughout the school year and help us with implementing into more classrooms in the future.
